Ottoman Bosnia

Introduction The Ottoman Sultanate which later became the seat of the Caliphate in 1517 was by no means perfect. A decline in Islamic thought, weakness in the Arabic language and closing the doors of ijtihad all had an impact on the implementation of Islam across the state. Yet despite this, the Ottoman State remained an Islamic State, and its concepts, criteria and convictions were Islamic. Legislation and administrative laws (kanun) were based on sharia, even if this was a tenuous link in some cases due to the decline in ijtihad, such as the devshirme, hereditary bay’a and tanzimat reforms.

The Battle of Ain Jaloot wasn’t what ultimately stopped the Muslim world falling to the Mongols

A tale of how Allah helps those who help themselves BY ABDULLAH AL ANDALUSI People often think the Battle of Ain Jaloot (1260CE) was a turning point in the invasion of the Mongols, and saved the rest of Muslim lands from destruction. However, this is not entirely true, the battle only delayed the Mongols, the truth, like most of history, is stranger than fiction. Above all the story offers us an interesting and recurring lesson – just when we think we have no hope of success in Allah’s cause, Allah gives those who remain steadfast supporting his deen, help from an unexpected quarter.

The Caliphate’s transition to the Gold Standard

BY FARUQ IBN QAYSR Introductory Remarks In his tract on monetary reform, John Maynard Keynes referred to gold as a barbarous relic, whose rigidity had fettered the world from economic freedom and prosperity. He spoke at a time when the Occident were suffering from macroeconomic anaemia and were yearning for a solution. In sheer desperation, fiat money became the drug that gave growth-addicts what they craved for in the short-run. However, years after its introduction, the fiat system has induced far more volatility than it sought to resolve. In truth, Keynes failed to realise that barbarity was a trait not of gold but of fiat, insofar as it has plagued the world with monetary anarchy. In fact, the very system he consigned to history has never been more relevant than it is today.

What is the official flag of the Caliphate?

Introduction There is no official flag for an Islamic State specified directly in the Qur’an and Sunnah. What we find are flags and banners used by the army of the Prophet ﷺ in Medina. Using qiyas (analogy) some contemporary scholars have extended the use of these flags and banners to a modern state and its citizens, and not just confined them to the armed forces. The use of flags to denote states is a modern phenomenon. Historically, flags were mainly used in warfare to identify the different armies on the battlefield. Ibn Khaldun says, “Flags have been the insignia of war since the creation of the world. The nations have always displayed them on battlefields and during raids. This was also the case in the time of the Prophet and that of the caliphs who succeeded him.”[1] In modern times flags are used to identify different countries and are used as a symbol to unite the nation. In America, there is a specific pledge for the flag and most public schools are required to schedule regular …

Tafseer Surah Tin

The following is based on a translation of Dr Fadhel al Samarrai’s Tafseer of Surah Tin. (1) By the fig and the olive (2) and Mount Sinai (3) and this safe land, (4) We created man in the finest mould. (5) Then We reduced him to the lowest of the low, (6) except for those who have iman and do right actions: they will have a reward which never fails. (7) What could make you deny the Reckoning after this? (8) Is Allah not the most just of Judges? (Surah At-Tin) The sura begins with the oath: والتين والزيتون ‘By the fig and the olive’ which are two well-known trees and the mufasireen have cited several reasons for mentioning these two trees.

“The example of my ummah is like the rain. It is not known whether the initial part or the latter part is good.”

This has been reproduced from Ottoman Dynasty Foundation. A hundred years ago, Ottoman soldiers entrusted these banknotes to Palestinian merchant, Ragheb Hilmi Al-Halul when they were retreating from Palestine and said: “When we come back, we will take our money”. Ragheb Hilmi Al-Halul family has been keeping these banknotes for a century. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: مثل أمتي مثل المطر لا يدرى أوله خير أم آخره “The example of my ummah is like the rain. It is not known whether the initial part or the latter part is good.” (Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2869)
